Brief Profile and experience in the relative field of action:

In November 1990, at a meeting of the representatives of the District Unions of Communities, which took place in Limassol, it was decided to create the Pancyprian Federation of Community Unions, a decision which materialised in February 1992 with its registration as an Association. In 1996, mainly for practical reasons, the General Assembly decided to rename it Cyprus Union of Communities. The primary objective of the Union is to contribute to the reinforcement of the Local Self-Government institution, mainly by modernizing the existing legislations under which the Local Authorities in its Communities-Members are established and operate, either as Improvement Boards or Village Commissions. The Community Councils in the free part of Cyprus are 352, cover 40% of the population and 90% of its territory.

Aims of Union

• 1. The defence and promotion of the Members' powers, interests, rights and privileges and, generally, of the independence and selfsufficiency or the Local Authorities.
• 2. The permanent and on an organised basis cooperation and exchange of views between them, for the achievement of common targets.
• 3. The collection of data and information being useful for the cooperation of the Communities.
• 4. The expression of opinions to any Authority, Body, Organism or person (including the Government and the House of Representatives) and claiming from the state matters aiming at the development and expansion of the Local Self-Government institution.
• 5. The participation in International Organs of Local Self-Government and its representation at Local and International Congresses.
